Choice of illuminator depends upon the type of night vision optic and its sensitivity. The two types of night vision available are IIT (Image Intensifier Tube) and DNV (Digital Night Vision).
IIT Night Vision is available with Gen1, Gen2 and Gen3 tubes. The lower the Gen number, the more power is required for satisfactory lighting. IIT Night Vision is sensitive to 850nm infrared only. 850nm IR has a visible source though the beam iteslf is invisable to the eye.
Digital Night Vision varies in performance depending upon the quality and sensitivity of the sensor. Pulsar night vision optics are fitted with high performance Near Infrared Sensors that require less IR power than low performance Chinese made night vision (Pard, ATN etc.)
Digital night vision is sensitive to both 850nm and 940nm infrared, 850nm provides a brighter image, though has a visible source. 940nm has an invisiable source, often described as a ‘stealth’ illuminator, though not as poweful. 940nm is useful for hunting spooky animals and essential for covert human observation.
