Thermal Imaging

A Pulsar thermal imager can spot persons and warm objects at long distance, is able to see through rain, mist, seaspray and light foliage.

Our product range covers optics with a variety of magnifications, field-of-view, resolution and sensitivity, each of which is suited to different tasks. It is important to evaluate a selection of devices to ensure fit-for-purpose performance.

Unlike a fixed gimbal thermal system, a Pulsar hand-held thermal imager is quicker to deploy and has higher performance, field-of-view, resolution and mist penetration. This is vital for person-overboard emergencies when time is critical.

The most chosen devices tend to have a low – medium magnification, suitable for boat and helicopter use. If searching from land or helicopters at a higher altitude, a higher magnification would increase distance performance. Our demonstration kits have a selection of devices that will help with decision making.

Multispectral Imaging

Multi-spectral imaging combines the advantages of LWIR thermal imaging with Visible light/NIR night vision. Thermal imaging forms an image with radiated heat, whilst night vision amplifies reflected light and faint light sources that are invisible to thermal.

For example, navigation beacons and strobes emit very little heat, but the emitted light be seen with night vision. Thermal cannot see light and night vision cannot see heat, Combining both technologies improves detection and identification.

Night vision also improves detection of floating objects that become invisible to a thermal imaging system during the ‘thermal blindness’ period, when an object’s heat emission is in a transitory state with little or no temperature difference to its surroundings.

Night Vision Goggles

ANV Generation 3+ night vision, AKA Commercial Gen4, is suitable for navigating vessels in harbours and inshore areas.

Night vision forms an image with reflected light in the same way as our eyes. It is unaffected by ‘thermal blindness’ (when an object’s heat emission is in a transitory state, with little or no temperature difference to its surroundings), improving the visibility of floating objects, structures and surface debris.

High light amplification enables use during dark moonless nights and the spotting of navigation beacons, lifejacket strobes and other light sources at extreme distance.

Ministry for Primary Industries Fisheries

The Ministry for Primary Industries purchased Pulsar night vision optics in 2016 for patrolling coastlines at night.

Illegal poaching of shellfish remains a problem in many areas, when poaching under the cover of darkness is the preferred choice for many large scale offenders.

Night vision equipment amplifies faint light sources, such as torches and head mounted lights, enabling detection at long distance, well beyond the capability of unaided vision.

As well as seeing light sources, night vision can detect light spill which is useful for detecting activity when the source is hidden by terrain and rocks.

A combination of thermal and night vision are potent tools for protecting our natural resources, with the added benefit of video recording for court evidence.
